Servo drives

Servo drive and its operating principle

Every servo drive consists of several key components: a servo motor (also called a servomotor), a servo amplifier, a PLC, and a position sensor, most often an encoder. The motor converts electrical energy into rotary motion, and the servo amplifier supplies the appropriate power and directs the current, responding to signals from the control system. The PLC, in turn, analyzes the sensor data, compares it with the specified parameters, and sends commands to the drive. This closed-loop system ensures maximum precision and smooth motion, regardless of changing load conditions.

The servo drive responds instantly to every encoder pulse, maintaining perfect accuracy and high torque even with dynamic speed changes. This is why servo systems are used in applications such as robotics, CNC machine tools, assembly lines, packaging systems, and precision dispensing machines.

How is a rotary engine constructed?

The heart of every servo drive is a rotary motor that works in close cooperation with the control system. The use of an encoder allows not only speed control but also precise determination of the motor's rotor position, which is crucial in applications requiring precise positioning. This solution allows for maintaining full synchronization and consistent operation even with a large number of axes.

Modern servo motors are characterized by high efficiency, small dimensions, and a compact design, which facilitates their integration into various systems. This makes them suitable not only for complex production lines but also for smaller industrial applications where reliability and ease of installation are key.

Servo drives in industrial processes and automation

The applications of servo drives in industry are extremely broad. They are used wherever precision, rapid response, and high reliability are essential. They are ideal for automating production processes, packaging, conveying, and positioning systems, as well as CNC machines requiring constant motion control. Modern servo drives can be fully integrated with host systems and PLCs, enabling the creation of complex motion control systems.

In such applications, communication between system components is achieved via modern protocols such as EtherCAT or Modbus RTU, enabling fast data transfer and precise coordination of multiple drives. Modbus RTU ensures compatibility with a wide range of PLCs, while servo amplifiers ensure smooth operation and effective control of motor torque and speed.

Why is a servo drive so important?

One of the main reasons servo drives are so widely used in automation is their accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional stepper motors, servo systems operate using feedback, allowing them to respond to load changes and maintain stable torque. This allows them to achieve high dynamic performance while maintaining smooth and quiet operation.
