What are operator panels?
Operator panels are also commonly referred to as control panels or HMIs (Human-Machine Interface). This device's main and most important element is a screen displaying key information about the production process. This element is a crucial tool for the operator—using it, they can enter data or issue commands to the device. Among the main functions of operator panels are, among others, controlling individual installations, monitoring the production process, and visualizing the production line. Depending on the model selected, the HMI panel may be equipped with buttons (older models) or a touchscreen (modern variants). Modern solutions not only simplify work but also save space, which is appreciated by owners of small facilities.
When is it worth investing in HMI panels?
HMI panels can be integrated with various industrial automation systems, such as SCADA. HMI is a simpler, local system, while SCADA is an entire monitoring network, a computer system designed to collect and analyze real-time data and monitor and control industrial processes from a higher level.
Compared to SCADA systems, with which they can be integrated, as mentioned, HMI panels are much better suited for simple systems with lower requirements or planned use of a small number of variables. Analyzing the basic functionality of the solution, they are almost identical to SCADA systems, yet they are a more affordable option. This type of operator panel is an excellent complement to simple machine systems with low requirements and a limited amount of variable data. It is also a good choice for smaller machines, but it is not suitable for monitoring complex processes. Manufacturers also do not recommend using it to control demanding production processes.
How to choose an HMI operator panel?
Proper operation of an HMI panel depends on the operating system and dedicated programming environment. When choosing the right model, it's worth considering the features and capabilities offered. Additionally, remember that these devices are most often connected to controllers or inverters, which function as communication ports. Options with USB ports are also available, enabling data exchange between other devices. When choosing a high-quality model, it's essential to also consider the processor's performance.
When planning to purchase an industrial operator panel, it's important to analyze the conditions in which it will be used, the tasks it will perform, and, consequently, the requirements it must meet. Contrary to popular belief, customers can choose not only the manufacturer or the visual appearance of the text or graphic panel, but also many other parameters. Image resolution plays a key role – the better it is, the larger all visualizations will be and the better the graphic quality. Modern touch panels with widescreen displays are ideal for this purpose. Communication capabilities should not be overlooked. The more features the panel software offers, the greater its effectiveness and, consequently, production efficiency.
Capabilities are one thing, but the quality of the device is another. In this regard, it's worth considering the lifespan of individual devices and their resistance to use in harsh environments. Models with a metal housing made of stainless steel and components resistant to harmful external factors are a good choice – low and high temperatures, high dust levels, splashes, shocks, and many others. We recommend that the chosen model be at least IP65 protected, including the front panel and buttons. It's also worth considering the possibility of replacing important HMI panel components – ports or the matrix, which are easily damaged or burned.
