DC Motors
How does a DC motor work? Construction and principle of operation
A classic brushed DC motor is characterized by a relatively simple construction. Its heart is the stator (the stationary part), which can be made of permanent magnets or have an electromagnet winding. Inside the stator, a rotor rotates, on which a copper winding (rotor windings) is usually wound.
The most important elements of this construction are the commutator and the brushes working with it. They supply voltage to the rotating element. The flow of current through the winding in a magnetic field generates an electromagnetic force. Thanks to the appropriate arrangement of magnetic field lines and cyclic switching of contacts by the commutator, the motor generates continuous torque, which starts rotating the shaft. This energy conversion is the basis of operation for thousands of devices around us.
It is worth remembering, however, that technology is advancing. In addition to traditional solutions, brushless motors (BLDC) are increasingly common, where mechanical commutation has been replaced by an electronic controller. This eliminates sparking at the brushes and increases durability, which is important in systems operating in continuous mode.
DC motor with gearbox
An electric motor itself usually spins very fast, but generates relatively little torque. In many applications, we need slower movement but enormous pulling force. This is where a gearbox comes in handy.
A DC motor with a gearbox, often called a gearmotor, is an integrated drive unit. The mechanical gearbox reduces the rotational speed of the output shaft, while simultaneously multiplying the torque. Depending on your needs, you will find various solutions in our offer:
Motor with planetary gearbox - planetary gearboxes are characterized by their ability to transmit very high loads while maintaining small dimensions. They are ideal for robotics, where space is limited, and the robot needs a lot of power.
Motor with worm gearbox - this type of gearbox allows for a 90-degree change in the axis of rotation and has a self-locking feature (the shaft does not rotate under load when the motor is unpowered).
Classic spur gear - simple, inexpensive, and effective in many applications.
Power supply and control
One of the biggest advantages of DC motors is their ease of control. In the simplest case, the motor changes speed proportionally to the supply voltage. Increasing the voltage accelerates the device, decreasing it slows it down. To change the direction of rotation, simply reverse the polarity.
In professional applications, however, more advanced methods are used. A DC motor controller uses a PWM signal (pulse width modulation). This allows for smooth speed control without losing torque at low RPMs. For machines requiring precision, an encoder will be indispensable. This is a sensor mounted on the shaft (often on the rear axle of the motor) that counts pulses with each rotation. This allows the controller to know exactly the position of the shaft and its speed. Such a closed-loop feedback system is standard in industrial automation and advanced robots, such as robotic arms or mobile platforms.
An important aspect is the selection of the power source. Each motor has specific rated parameters. A popular standard is 12V, often used in smaller devices and automotive applications, but in industry, higher voltages dominate (24V, 48V, and more). Remember that the power supply must have adequate current capacity - a motor at startup or under heavy load is characterized by a surge in current consumption.
Applications of DC Motors
The versatility offered by a direct current motor makes its list of applications almost endless. Here's where you'll most often find our products:
Robotics and hobby, where small motors, often with a gearbox, drive the wheels of mobile robots. Hobbyists are often interested in products similar to what Botland store offers, but here you will also find reinforced versions for professional applications.
Home automation, such as drives for blinds, garage doors, electronic locks. Brushed DC motors are often used there due to their low price and simplicity of control.
Household appliances, such as mixers, vacuum cleaners, and clippers. Wherever the motor needs to be efficient and compact.
Industry, and more specifically conveyor lines, feeders, dispensers. In these applications, high torque and reliability are paramount, which is why a DC motor with a gearbox from renowned brands like Siemens or Mitsubishi is often chosen.
What to consider when choosing?
When deciding on a specific motor model, analyze the following parameters:
Voltage - does your system have 12V, 24V, or other DC voltage?
Rotational speed - how many revolutions per minute do you need at the output? Remember that a gearbox reduces speed but increases force.
Torque - this is the most important parameter. It determines whether the motor can "handle" the weight or overcome the machine's resistance.
Dimensions - will the motor fit in the housing of your device?
Motor type - do you need a simple brushed motor, or perhaps a precise stepper motor or an efficient BLDC? Motor types differ in operating characteristics and control requirements.
